Medical Care Quality Assessment Methods
Quality assessment in health care is the process of measuring and calculating the results and performance of health care systems based on certain quality standards. The goal of measuring and comparing the performance of health care is to improve the health of society, lower the cost of health care per person, reduce staff burnout, and, most importantly, improve patient care.
Structure, process, and outcome are the three main types of health care quality measures. This way of putting things into groups is called the Donabedian model, after the doctor who came up with it.
1. Structural Measures
The ability of a provider to give good care to patients is measured by structural measures. This method takes into account things like how easy it is to get to the hospital, the doctor’s office, and other treatment centers. Infrastructures, such as the availability of modern medical tools like electronic medical records and medication order entry systems, are also taken into account by structural measures. The number of health care providers to people who need care is an example of a structural measure. This model is mostly used by insurance companies and organizations that accredit facilities to figure out how good the care they provide is.
2. Measuring the process
Process measures are just what the facility does to keep people healthy and improve their health, whether they are healthy or have a condition. These measures try to find out if people who have been diagnosed with different health problems are getting the right care and treatment. Public institutions often use process measures to see if they are meeting the generally accepted standards of practice. Process measures include the number of people who get preventive services like vaccinations or the number of people who are getting treatment for cancer.
3. Outcome Measures
Measures of outcomes show how the services and treatments affected the patients’ health. Some examples of outcome measures are the number of patients with diabetes whose blood sugar is under control, the number of people who die during surgery, and the number of people who have problems after surgery. Even though outcome measures are a good way to judge the quality of health care, the results are often affected by things like the size of the population and the health of the patients. So, methods that take risk into account are used to get more accurate results about the quality of health care.
Measures of how patients feel about their care and how easy it is to get care are also used to judge the quality of health care. But these two measures aren’t used as often, and they are sometimes combined into the Donabedian model.
