Paragraph 1-In Adam’s essay, he makes approaches to science and religion. From what I comprehended, the essay talks a lot about “forces” (influences) that act upon science and art. Instead of being directly stated, they use examples used symbolically that are each related to the topics of argumentation. The essay refers to how one may view representations in the world from the given perspectives. The representations being examples of which are viewed as symbolic in each case; the dynamo representing modern science and the Church representing religion. The essay ultimately makes a comparative analysis of between both modern science and technology and religion (Christianity in this case) and how it has come to take the place of which before resided religion. This can best be seen from when he takes the Virgin for example of the church of which used to be an great influence in the West, has now rather than a force of power, has become no more than symbolic as an art form of beauty.
Paragraph 2
I personally struggled with this reading due to how verbose it is but, from what I understood of this story, “The Virgin and the Dynamo” by Henry Adams is about Christianity during the 1900’s. He is a man that like to compare completely different topics and finding the similarity. He compares religion and science as a way to show the use of religion. In the story, Adams says he began to feel as he grew to feel the forty-foot dynamos as a moral force, much as the early Christians felt the Cross.” This comparison shows that he believes the relation between the machines and their parts are just like the Christians being part of the Cathedral and their faith. Thus, creating a relation between faith and science. He combines the two relations in his studies; for everything that is believed to be irrational, he justifies it with saying that it takes faith to believe.
