ADVOCATING THROUGH POLICY NURS 8100
Each day, problems emerge in health care settings and communities to the extent of deterring the achievement of health care goal. The work environment might be unaccommodating and communities could be experiencing challenges out of denial of basic health care needs. In such cases, nurses should play an advocacy role. Their voice is instrumental in promoting positive change, and I advocate for the nursing profession by championing for better patient care and community services.
Patient advocacy has been an essential part of nursing. Indeed, nursing is incomplete without patient advocacy, which involves helping patients to get the information and resources needed to make health care decisions (Murray, 2017). As a patient advocate, my role is to speak on behalf of the voiceless as my role necessitates. My areas of concern include activism towards patient protection from harm, ensuring that patients access the right materials that enable them to make accurate health care decision, and communicating patient preferences whenever an opportunity emerges.

Nurses advocate for their communities to ensure that the health needs of the broader society are met. Doing so is critical for the success of nursing since a highly resourced community is convenient for a nurse to serve. As Buckley (2018) suggested, advocacy at the community level is mainly concerned with policy changes and resources. In supporting this view, I try as much as possible to communicate with community leaders and show them how to empower the community through health care resources. In public forums and schools, I take any available opportunity to emphasize the need for advanced health care infrastructure. The goal is to improve access to health regardless of where a person lives.
Overall, advocating for the nursing profession follows the premise that some needs of selected groups are not addressed. Next, a nurse decides to become the voice of such groups. Advocacy for patients and communities shows that nurses can do more than medical assistance at health care facilities. They can help to champion the needs of others to improve the general health care situation in hospitals, communities, and nations at large.

As noted by Dr. Stanley and Dr. White in this week’s media presentation, professional nurses should be engaging in advocacy efforts to improve health and nursing practice through involvement in the policy process at the institutional, local, state, or federal levels. This array of possibilities for involvement provides opportunities for all nurses, regardless of time, or other possible constraints. Successful policy making is a collaborative effort, and one that commands mutual respect from all involved. Your involvement in policy making can lead to expanded opportunities as both a nurse leader and as a respected member of an interprofessional health care team.

- Develop a short, yet persuasive PowerPoint (up to 3 slides) as follows:
- Identify the practice issue that would benefit from being addressed through the policy process
- Represent the key stakeholders (i.e. use graphical images when possible)
- Propose one strategy for how a nurse could advocate for this issue
The PowerPoint should be succinct, visually appealing, and effective.
