Whilst the recent years have witnessed a significant decline in hospital falls, patient falls is still considered one of the most prevalent adverse events reported in many healthcare facilities. As a persistent and unresolved issue, falls among elderly patients is attributed to a myriad of causes and risk factors, with many of the cases resulting in injury to the affected patients (Schoberer et al., 2022). Considering the substantial financial pressures and lawsuits facing many of the healthcare organisations to growing list of patient safety concerns, strong emphasis by these facilities is placed on identifying a ‘silver bullet’ to fall prevention among the high-risk older patients (Yamada, Demura & Yamaji, 2022).

Concluding Thoughts

Patient safety remains a key element of contemporary healthcare quality aimed at enhancing the analysis and reporting of incidents, and minimisation of adverse events and their effects on patients. Burch and Veninšek (2019) admitted that patient falls among the elderly is a highly persistent and unresolved issue that is attributed to a range of demographic factors, care factors and risk factors that come into play to contribute to the heightened risk of patient falls.
