Prior to starting this class, I had never heard of Aldo Leopold. The names that I associate with wildlife conservation most often are Jane Goodall, Sir David Attenborough, and the Irwin Family. All big name, all very well known and they all have done incredible things for wildlife conservation. Jane Goodall of course spend her life studying and protecting chimpanzees and encouraged people to see them as our relatives and as compassionate and feeling creatures. She opened the eyes of millions to be more aware of the animals that we interact with. David Attenborough is an extremely well known name, and he is a renowned film maker and conservationist that has made several awe inspiring and gut wrenching documentaries that highlight the way humans have impacted the planet. Because of his life long work, so many more people are tuned in to the state of the world and in turn they are more environmentally conscious of the things they do. The Irwin Family is another well known group of people that devote their lives to conservation work in Australia, taking part in habitat restoration and animal rehabilitation. Their work has also touched millions of people and has made the public aware of the crisis’s the world faces.

I believe that Leopold’s writings will always be relevant in the present and in the future. At the heart of his writings, there is this idea that wilderness has to be protected and that the world cannot continue on without balance. Leopold grew up in a similar era to how today’s youths are growing up; in a world of change. Although we are experienced different issues today, the fact remains that our wild places are shrinking, and only conservation and wildlife protection will keep all of humanity from falling into ruin. Leopold was really a grassroots advocate, and believed that the biggest change comes from local efforts, as small as caring for the land that you have and restoring it, as well as using it to live sustainably. All of these ideas are so important and can be used to combat the climate crisis that we are facing today. Buying produce from local farmers, growing what you’re able to at home, these are all things Leopold has touched on in his writings, and I believe his work will always be meaningful in conversations and efforts to restore the planet.

In your responses to this topic we will be exploring what you know about the history of human relationships with wildlife. In particular, we’ll be talking about a man who founded the science of game management and was a pioneer in wildlife ecology–Aldo Leopold.

A video about Leopold, “Aldo Leopold: A Prophet for All Seasons” is available in Learning Resources.

Please watch “A Prophet for All Seasons” and then tell us what you know and think about Aldo Leopold by answering the questions below. I will be looking for well-written, thorough responses that reflect your readings and thinking. You don’t need to answer every question but please develop your answers with college-level thinking, writing, and, as needed, research.

  • Have you ever heard of Aldo Leopold before starting this course? How and what did you already know about him?
  • If your answer to the first question is no, answer this question instead: Is there another person you associate with wildlife ecology and conservation? Who? And what is this person’s contribution to conservation?
  • After watching the video below, do you think that Leopold’s work and ideas, about managing and conserving wildlife in the first half of the 20th century, are relevant in the urbanizing and climate-changing 21st century?
  • Compare how different societies (e.g., early agrarian) as discussed in Chapter 1 of the Moyle text relate to wildlife with how we relate to wildlife today.

Even after you post your main response, keep thinking about Leopold’s contributions to the history of wildlife ecology and management, and respond to your classmates (at least 2 responses required on this topic this week) with your new understanding of Leopold and wildlife conservation.

Remember—you are strongly encouraged but not required to post your main discussion comments by Saturday, 11:59 pm Eastern Time. Posting by mid-week helps everyone have plenty to discuss and keeps our discussion lively and informative, benefiting everyone. Remember too that the Discussions are conversations, so once they close on the deadline, later posts do not earn points.

Q 1&2

Before this course, I had never heard of Aldo Leopold. Someone I had always associated with wildlife conservation growing up was my dad. He taught me how to hunt game when I was younger and how important it is for population control of animals in certain areas. He made sure I knew that we only hunt for what we need/ limit ourselves harshly each season.

Q 3

I think Leopold’s ideas about managing and conserving wildlife in the first half of the 21st century are still relevant to urbanization and climate change in this century. His ethics were about maintaining a balance between industrialization and land management and the harmony needed between the land and the people using it. The way we live our lives across the globe can have severe effects on our ecosystem and environment. We need to care about our land as much as we care for ourselves in order to conserve our ecosystem.
