Literature review

Ringel, “Aggressive Approach” in Why a shootout between Black Panthers and law enforcement 50 years ago matters today. In this article, I focus on the aggressive and combative approaches the law enforcement agencies used against Black Panther Party members. I cite, on p.2 as evidence, “the force was heavily armed and wearing flak jackets,” though none of the targeted members was in criminal violence records.

This article reinforces the idea of racial profiling during the forceful eviction of the Black Panthers. The police and the US policing at that time sought to force Black Panthers out of the communities because of their political activities. The article provides evidence of how surveillance and intimidation of Black Panther leaders had become common as the government sought to infiltrate revolutionary groups fighting for Black rights.

Williams, “Some Abstract Thing Called Freedom”: Civil Rights, Black Power, and the Legacy of the Black Panther Party. In this article, I focus on the police conceptions of the black panthers that were misguiding the community that felt the impact of the Black Panthers’ influence towards social and economic equality. I cite, on p.16 as evidence, “The FBI director J. Edgar Hoower called the BPP the “single greatest threat to the internal security” of the United States”.

The article asserts Congressman Richardson Preyer analysis of the Black Panthers that is contradictory to that of the police, and he concludes that “who disagreed with their violent tactics, felt that the Panthers served a purpose in focusing attention on ghetto problems and argued that they gave a sense of pride to the Black community.” This article delves into how police brutality and misinformation derailed the Black Panthers’ efforts to create a fair and just society.

Meredith Roman, “The Black Panther Party and the Struggle for Human Rights.” In this journal, I focus on the Black Panthers’ strive for human rights, and I analyze the roles of the COINTELPRO and US White Supremacy. I also focus on the Panthers’ rhetoric of “pigs,” Cold war geopolitics, and the armed revolution. I cite, on p.1 as evidence, “Reconceptualizing the Black panthers as human rights activists is not an academic exercise, but rather contains the potential to foster greater support for the Black Lives Matter movement.”

The Panthers used the term “human rights” to fight against police brutality, uplift the black community, and gain decent housing for the black people and other suppressed communities. This journal provides evidence about how the police and the US media succeeded in framing the Panthers as a “gun-toting gang and anti-White hoodlums”, slowing the African American freedom struggle.

Bassett, “No justice, no health: The Black Panther Party’s fight for health in Boston and beyond.” In this article, I focus on the party’s fight for equality in health care services. I cite, on p.1 as evidence, “Protection meant advocating for a wide range of social and economic rights, including the right to health.” The Panthers viewed police violence as a broader part of social violence. The party integrated the civil rights movement, women’s movement, and other revolutionary and progressive movements.

They perceived inadequate public services as a form of oppression, and to promote their social justice and human dignity, Panthers incorporated “No Justice, No Health” in their survival programs. The article provides particular evidence of the Panthers’ establishment of multiple clinics throughout the country and the national sickle cell screening program. These programs are still relevant today.

Bassett, “Beyond berets: the Black Panthers as health activists.” In this journal, I focus on the idea of Black Panthers as health care advocates. I cite, on p.1 as evidence, “Today the organization is remembered for its black-clad, black-bereted members in disciplined formation, bearing arms. These are compelling images, but they in no way capture the organization’s historical significance or its lasting contribution to public health.”

Health disparities based upon racial divides still exist today, but the article acknowledges the party’s legacy of advocating adequate and decent housing, jobs, and education. The article provides specific evidence of how the party’s “Protection” came in form of programs that took up the right to health and not in gun form.
