Alberta, has taken many approaches in order to combat the current situation of substance use today. Harm reduction is an important approach used to assist clients with taking necessary steps to overcome the substance use without total abstinence initially. Within this paper, harm reduction effectiveness will be discussed along with strategies to implement harm reduction approaches within the clinical setting and explain how to improve the publics acceptance of harm reduction strategies. This paper will discuss the harm reduction position statement. The writer will examine and encapsulate the statement, give personal perspectives and describe how this statement can be implemented into my nursing practice. The statement discusses harm reduction strategies and approaches nurses can take to provide safe quality care to all clients. Additionally, the statement discusses the importance of healthcare professionals providing non-judgmental care to enhance the autonomy of all clients. There is a significant number of individuals with inequalities that are currently using substances. The position the association is taking is ultimately in favor of harm reduction approaches. They recognize the importance harm reduction has on the safety, treatment and quality of care these clients receive. The associations believe that nurses need to strongly advocate for policy change for harmful practices, and that clients should be actively involved in the decisions they make surrounding their care. The values of harm reduction are directly in line with the values of the code of Ethics for nurses. Many clients may not be ready for total abstinence harm reduction allows health care professionals to build supportive relationships with these clients and to help work along side the clients to work towards their goals to achieve safety and wellbeing. Additionally, ensuring to always provide non-judgmental care even if it goes against your values and beliefs. POLICY REVIEW ANALYSIS 3 As a current Registered Psychiatric Nurse working the front lines in addiction and mental health, I completely agree with the statement and understand the significance of implementing harm reduction approaches into nursing practices. It is crucial now for all nurses to develop therapeutic relationships with clients to provide non-judgemental quality safe care. There is still remarkable amount of stigma directed towards the substance users by both the general public and healthcare professionals. Above all, there are various harm reduction approaches used today, that can help decrease blood borne infectious disease, prevent opioid overdose deaths, provide access to non-judgmental support programs and provide opioid agonist therapy. Harm reduction does not necessarily mean complete abstinence. It is important to remember to meet the client where there at and work with the client to develop treatment goals and positive support. As discussed by Haines and OBryne, the supply of substances is becoming more toxic and harmful for users both psychologically and physically. Some of the substances are causing drug induced psychosis. (2020, p.193). They argued that a safer drug supply is needed, and more harm reduction services need to become readily available (Haines & OBryne, 2020, p.199). I believe that harm reduction approaches are essential in decreasing the negative consequences from substance use. I am seeing first hand the positive effects harm reduction has on my clients lives and will advocate and continue to provide safe, patient centered care. Prevalence of substance use is widespread among all populations. Patients presenting to acute care centers with various co-morbidities that nurses must feel competent and confident in providing safe quality care. All nurses need to strongly advocate for implementation and usage of harm reduction approaches. It is important to realize the amount of stigma towards individuals whom use substances. The general public and healthcare professionals should be educated in regards to harm reduction, POLICY REVIEW ANALYSIS 4 building trusting relationships, and providing non-judgmental care to all clients. Assisting with helping people understand that addiction is the same as having a chronic illness such as diabetes. Teaching others that addiction is not a choice or self-inflicted illness, will help to decrease the amount of stigma towards this population. As stated in by Worley, initially it is a choice to use, although afterwards there are neurobiological changes that occur in the brain (2019, p.12). I will ensure to incorporate motivational interviewing into my practice as this technique will help focus on the stages of change, and work alongside the client to determine which stage they are at. As Worley discussed in the article, the importance of compassion and that compassion can be taught (2019, p.13). I will be sure to take every opportunity to teach my colleagues skills to build on providing compassionate care. I will also self-reflect to determine ways that I can improve upon providing compassionate care. Finally, I believe that educating the public and healthcare professionals in regards to addiction and mental health will help to decrease the stigma and promote awareness, increased support, and additional harm reduction practices for this population. Above all promoting autonomy to help clients feel valued and cared for. Given these important points, it is more crucial then ever to take action now to help combat the opioid overdose deaths and substance use addiction. Specifically promoting and educating people in regards to the inherent value of harm reduction approaches. Nurses need to develop therapeutic relationships with clients, advocate for positive change, treat all clients equally and meet the client where they are at in their recovery. Drugs are becoming increasingly toxic, would the legalization of all drugs have a positive impact on harm reduction and decreasing opioid related deaths?
