CCJ4746: Statistics in Criminology
2 PAGES Project 4: Regression using Stata This project is designed to assess your understanding of the material presented in Chapter 11. You will need Virtual Lab, the class dataset posted on Canvas, and the guide posted on Canvas. Your submission should be approximately 1½-2 pages long, not including your output. And please do not use the combination of variables that we used in our examples – choose a new set instead. Instructions 1. Choose one interval or ratio variable to be your independent variable and one interval or ratio variable to be your dependent variable. Make sure that your choices make logical sense (e.g., age can’t be a dependent variable). Tell us what variables you chose. 2. Begin a new log file in Stata. 3. Compute the bivariate correlation (r) between your variables, using the syntax shown in the slides and Canvas guide as a model. Tell us the values of r and p. Is the correlation statistically significant? 4. Estimate a regression following the syntax shown in the guide and in the slides. Make sure that you type your independent and dependent variables in the right places. Also request the standardized coefficient. Tell us the value of your unstandardized regression coefficient (b) and its associated p value. Is the coefficient positive or negative? Is it statistically significant? 5. Interpret the coefficient using phrasing like this: A one unit increase in independent variable is associated with a ___ unit increase/decrease in dependent variable. Try to make this statement as easily interpretable as possible. For example, in the book, a one hour increase in hours worked is associated with an increase of $10 in wages. 6. How does the standardized regression coefficient compare with the correlation coefficient? 7. Compute a predicted value using the equation y = a + bx. You will need the constant/ intercept, the regression coefficient, and a value of x (the mean is a good choice). Multiply the coefficient by the x value and add the constant. Please show your math. Tell us what you found (e.g., a respondent who never had anything taken from him/her had a predicted value of 0.596 on the robbery victimization variable). 8. Please paste your complete Stata log (showing all of your commands) after your answers. As noted in the syllabus, grades will be based on execution (your successful use of the software and presentation of the results), interpretation (your write-up), and mechanics.
