The nursing shortage has been an ongoing issue and reports say that it will continue into the future (American Nurses Association, n.d.). However, there is a new trend of having inexperienced nurses at the bedside (American Nurses Association, n.d.). America’s nurses are aging right along with the American population. Many nurses have left the bedside due to a push to acquire a higher degree and the physical aspect of bedside nursing (American Nurses Association, n.d.). With the shortage of experienced nurses at the bedside inter-professional collaboration between caregivers has become strained (American Nurses Association, n.d).

The nursing shortage will cause a serious challenge as the population ages as many new graduate nurses stay at the bedside for less than two years. Having experienced nurses work in collaboration with health care providers has been a factor in reducing medical errors (Grand Canyon University, 2018). Having experienced nurse at the bedside improves patient outcomes as experienced nurse often provide effective patient education(Grand Canyon University, 2018). The future of nursing is dependent upon the innovations of nurse leaders of today (Grand Canyon University, 2018).

Ericka, it is true that the nursing shortage is not a new issue in most healthcare organizations.  Most facilities are struggling to ensure that their available nurses attending to the increasing number of patients without realizing that there are few nurses. Most experienced nurses are aging so there is no enough replacement (Hoseini-Esfidarjani et al., 2017). Young nurses are concerned with huge wages and salaries so most of them are spending most of their time in colleges as they seek to further their credentials to entice huge payments. These affected facilities are forced to pay the available nurses exorbitant wages for them to attend to the patients.  Also, burnout and fatigue are important in the understaffed environment. Experienced nurses are crucial in improving positive patient outcomes.  These experienced nurses understand the mechanisms that can be used to improve the quality of healthcare services. Therefore, losing these experienced nurses without replacement or having the same people being promoted compromised reliable service delivery.
