Description:
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze and critique job advertisements used in the recruitment process by applying the knowledge of legislation and human resource practices covered in class. You are also challenged to design your own job advertisement and obtain price quotes for posting it.
Requirements:
1. Collect four job advertisements for job positions within Canada from a variety of media sources – company websites, online job boards, print or online newspapers or professional journals etc. Do not use the same source more than once. In terms of quality of the job advertisements, one of the job ads should be considered excellent and three of the job ads should be considered poor.
2. Each job ad should be inserted prior to the one-page discussion that relates to it.
3. Provide a one page, single-spaced, in-depth discussion for each job ad, critically analyzing why you rated them excellent or poor and applying your comprehensive knowledge from the course. Include in your discussion, recommendations for improvement.
At the top of the page, list the media source and the date of the publication or date retrieved from a website if applicable. No other headings or point form is to be used. If external sources are used, they must be referenced. Some examples of areas to analyze include:
Is the advertisement compliant with applicable legislation? Apply your knowledge of legislation issues covered in class, for example, BFORs, discrimination, employment equity, etc. Discuss in detail.
Is enough information included regarding the job description (job summary, duties and responsibilities, minimum qualifications and requirements)? Discuss in detail.
Is the media source relevant to their target market? Discuss why or why not.
How is the format, layout, font, colour scheme, etc.? Apply the AIDA formula
4. Design a job advertisement for a non-HR related job. You are required to create a unique company name and a company logo. Give the general nature of the company (its size, business, location, clients etc.) and the company culture (the environment, interactions, work pace etc.). Include a detailed job description (job summary, duties and responsibilities, minimum qualifications and requirements). All of the above elements should be included within the job ad itself. The font requirements do not apply to your job ad. You can design it how you choose. Reference sources utilized in a separate section in your reference list.
5. Obtain prices for your job advertisement to be posted in in four media sources – two from print or online newspapers or professional journals and two from online job boards. The media choices must be relevant to your job advertisement. Free sources are not to be included, as it is already assumed these would be utilized extensively. Price quotes should be fully explained with regard to how the quote was obtained, the duration or specific days that the ad will be posted and which section of the newspaper (if applicable). For print sources, the price quotes need to be tailored specifically to your job advertisement, for example, size (calculated according to the number of lines, characters, and/or inches of your ad), font, logo, colour scheme etc., depending on the price criteria. Show any calculations. You may choose to have a smaller version of your job advertisement for the print sources. If so, please provide an example. Reference sources utilized in a separate section in your reference list.
6. For each media choice, provide a detailed discussion outlining your rationale for the choice. This should be included directly below each price quote description.
7. Provide a Reference List for all your information sources, using APA or MLA format. There should be three sections to your reference list with headings.
The first section pertains to any sources utilized for the critical analyses of the job ads. All external sources of information or comparison need to be cited. Information from class discussions does not need to be referenced, but specific information from the textbook does.
The second section refers to sources used as background research for the development of the job ad.
The third section includes all sources used to retrieve the media price quotes.
