Describe the difference in roles between leadership and management. Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example. As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap.

Leadership is involved when change is needed educate or communicate workflow change with various clinicians at a hospital or outpatient setting. This change is clear communication that should be an open door policy to field concerns about the change. The nursing profession must produce leaders throughout the healthcare system, from the bedside to the boardroom, who can serve as full partners with other health professionals and be accountable for their own contributions to delivering high-quality care while working collaboratively with leaders from other health professions (NCBI, 2011). Nursing management is a branch of the nursing field which focuses on managing nurses and patient care standards(McMahon, 2022). Nursing management works with the nursing staff of the hospital or outpatient clinic. The manager oversees procedures, discharges, transfers, either evaluating care or teaching the staff about new developments. Management and Leadership overlap when dealing with change needed with staff to ensure care is kept at a high standard for patient care. As a nursing leader I would take advantage of constant communication with the leadership of the hospital or facility, to make sure we are both on the same page for whatever interventions are needed to provide the best patient care.

Hello Kathy,

This was an interesting view on managers vs leaders. I was intrigued to read your perspective on how a leader has an impact on those following inside and outside of the workplace, while the manager only has an impact in the workplace. Do you think that a manager can develop leadership qualities that will impact the followers enough to change the idea that they can impact their employees while at work?

I agree that the overlap resides in working towards the same goal for the department, the leader has an overall responsibility to the quality of care and the patient satisfaction (Williamson, 2020). While the manger focuses on the tasks for department success on a larger level, such as planning, budgeting, performance, staff schedules, educational and enhancement opportunities (Williams, 2020). It is interesting, the different roles but working towards the same goal for the department, the people are focused on differently, staff and patient. I think it is equally important for both the leader and manager to show the value of the followers care as well as those of the patients and department morale.

Hi Kathy. Do you think you would ever obtain a leadership or management test position in nursing? As my days as a student nurse I remember learning a lot about the different leadership styles in nursing. The ability to lead is essential for success. Nursing staff retention and job satisfaction are thought to be significantly influenced by the leadership styles of nurse managers (Asamani et al., 2016). I always found transformational leadership style the most effective. Collaboration, a shared vision, inspiration, and encouragement are all used by transformational leaders to promote change. These leaders are frequently characterized as charismatic, outgoing, open to new experiences, innovative, and visionary with an eye toward the future.

Hello Kathy, great job on your post. When change is necessary, leadership is engaged. Usually, in a hospital or outpatient context, different practitioners are educated about or informed about workflow changes. This change has been well communicated, and there should be no barriers to addressing any objections. While leadership inspires, encourages, and helps an organization achieve its objectives, management entails regulating a group to achieve the organization’s goals. While managers exert control, leaders persuade followers to work toward shared goals (Jibreal, 2021). Nursing must generate leaders at all levels of the healthcare system, from the operating room to the bedside, who can collaborate with leaders from other health professions and work as full partners with other health professionals to deliver high-quality care.

KATHY I agree with you that the nursing profession must produce leaders throughout the healthcare system. These nurse leaders should be competent in guiding their respective organizations into attaining their goals. At the same time, nurse leadership should guarantee positive patient outcome and patient safety (Bush et al., 2020). Nursing is an evolving field also requires a leader who can plan and implement change. In change implementation, nurse leader has to communicate about the change to different stakeholders and listen to their views. Therefore, nurse leaders are expected to have good communication skills and systems to allow nurses and other players to provide their feedback. Nursing leadership may also be delegated to perform nursing management (Halkias & Neubert, 2020). Nursing management is a branch of the nursing field which focuses on managing nurses and patient care standards. Management and Leadership overlap therefore nursing managers and leaders can work interchangeably.

Kathy, I really enjoyed your post on this topic and you made some really good points on the differences between leadership and management. Especially the quote you used, Nursing management is a branch of the nursing field which focuses on managing nurses and patient care standards (McMahon, 2022).This is such a good example, management is one of the many branches that contribute to the contribution of good nursing care and patient care standards. It takes a village to make a facility stand strong and run efficiently. This has been a struggle in the hospital I am currently at now. Unfortunately we have been struggling with this the past couple of years. I honestly believe that a good foundation of leaders starts with the higher up in a company. Nurse managers and leaders have similar goals of implementing progressive improvements in the healthcare environment (Whitney, 2018). I think it takes a strong individual that is open minded to critique and ideas for change to build a village that can uphold and make that company thrive.

I agree with your submission, especially your reference to nurses rising in leadership from the bedside to the boardroom (loved that :))   As you mentioned there is increasing recognition that nurses must be involved as leaders and decision-makers throughout healthcare, not just at the bedside or within the nursing community. Nurses add something quite unique to the experience of safe and patient centered care as they are the ones most able to connect with patient and families, communicate, and coordinate care across different departments and voices of other professionals involved in their care while dealing with many broken processes and being able to quickly find solutions.
