Research Article #1: Theory-Based Nurse Practitioner Practice: Caring in Action

After reading the article on Nursing Theory (attachment listed) the students will use their Library (or Google Scholar) search skills to locate a nursing article that utilizes or discusses a nursing theory that aligns with the student’s interest.  Students will read, reflect on, and discuss that article. Students will discuss how the author implemented and/or applied a nursing theory in a research study, OR discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the chosen theory. This will be a 1-page summary. Students must identify the theorist and theory used in the article.

While nursing theories are preferred, if you would like to explore a non-nursing theory and how it informs your nursing practice, please email me (Dr. McGaughy) FIRST to discuss your rationale. Appreciative Inquiry is a favorite theoretical foundation of mine, and it is not a nursing theory.

The article “The COMFORT Communication Model: A Nursing Resource to Promote Health Literacy in Organizations” by Goldsmith et al. (2019) presents the COMFORT Communication Model which was formulated by Katharine Kolcaba, PhD, RN. as a nursing resource designed to advance health literacy within organizations. Based on nursing theory, they argue that this resource helps nurses improve communication between patients and families as well as increase health literacy levels within an organization. The COMFORT Communication Model consists of several essential elements, including connecting, options, mindful presence, family, openings, relating, and teamwork. These principles help nurses build rapport with patients, including them in decision-making processes, and create an environment that fosters teamwork and support.

One strength of the COMFORT Communication Model lies in its attention to patients’ needs, aligning it with nursing theories emphasizing patient-centered care. Nurses using this framework can effectively communicate with patients and their families to involve them in decision-making while creating a supportive and collaborative environment – ultimately leading to improved health outcomes and greater trust between patient and nurse.

One potential shortcoming of the COMFORT Communication Model is its applicability across patients and situations. Some patients may require different approaches due to unique needs or may not respond positively to certain elements. Furthermore, the implementation may require additional training or resources, making it challenging in certain organizations. Despite these potential restrictions, the COMFORT Communication Model remains an effective nursing resource that promotes health literacy through effective communication and patient-centric care.

Overall, the COMFORT Communication Model is an effective nursing resource for improving health literacy in organizations. Based on nursing theory and emphasizing patient-centric care, effective communication, and collaboration. However, it should be remembered that this may not always be applicable or require additional resources to implement successfully.
