The Art of Written Literature
Writing is among the oldest forms of communication among people. It is a form of communication among human beings that involves emotions, signs, and symbols. However, it is a process through which the ideas and thoughts of one individual flow into a readable form. However, writing makes communication more natural by complementing speech. History dates back to 300 BC when it was developed in Mesoamerica and later adopted in 1300 BC in Mesopotamia (Fischer 260) where they used a form of writing called cuneiform for record keeping. On the other side, ancient Egypt used hieroglyphic writing for the same reason. Advancement in research led to the development of Linear B writing which was more comfortable as it of syllables (Fischer 260). The final stage of language development is the alphabetic principles which are in use today. Everyone can write, but not all of them can efficiently communicate with the reader. In this essay , I give examples of my evolution of writing and the skills that I consider for good and effective writing together with examples of writers who have inspired me.
First of all who is a writer? This is a person that uses different styles in literature to communicate their ideas. An author on the other hand has to be the originator of the written work. Therefore, both the author and the writer express their thoughts through writing, but the authors work has to be original (Fortun 3). People write for different reasons including educating, entertaining, influencing others and also as a source of income. One of the reasons that impact people to write is prior experiences (Fortun 20). At a young age when we are growing up, the environment around us teaches us a lot of things. Ben Carson, the author of Think Big, explains that he was inspired to write the book by his real-life experience. He hardly understood stuff in class, but through his mothers encouragement, he grew to become the worlds most renowned neurosurgeon. Other than the environment, people participate in events and groups that impact on them too. Using their imagination, writers can develop a story from an elementary idea. Stavros Halvatiz explains how he wrote his first book, Scarab, by speculating about a hall of records. When we were in sixth grade, the English teacher told us to write a poem about anything and immediately, I thought of steak. My poem was entitled the steak who was labelled the best in our class.
To communicate effectively, one must follow several strategies in language. The first component is a central idea. James Scott, the author of Against the Grain focuses on a fundamental concept of civilization. However, the idea is not sufficient on its own and requires subordinate plans for support. In this case, Scott uses other sources to weigh the benefits and costs of civilization so that he argued against it. The literary work then requires an organization of ideas. By reading the introduction, one can grab the general idea of what the author intends to communicate. Ideas in literature need to flow coherently and sequentially for easy understanding (Writing About Writing). There exists a universal finite bound of structures in every form of communication. Another component of useful written work is that it borrows from other work as supporting materials. It incorporates the ideas of other writers about a particular topic. However, if the thoughts are acquired directly, then the author has to be acknowledged I the piece of work. Expression of words in an excellent piece of literature is clear and specific. There is no ambiguity or wordiness in the art. Spelling and grammar is the last component of good literary works. Misspelt words and misplaced punctuation marks could change the meaning of a subject. It is, therefore, necessary to proofread work to ensure that it is free of grammatical errors. On the other side, a bad writer is also weak in communicating. There is no coherence in the ideas, language is full of errors both grammatical, and punctuation and their works borrow from other readers without acknowledging them.
However, my idea of good writing is a little different from that free of grammatical errors. I believe that what determines good reading is its ability to communicate the thoughts to the readers. According to (Writing About Writing chapter 12), a good piece of work is that which responds to the prevailing situation, uses the appropriate technology and one which incorporates the writers purpose. For instance, if you write your work via a message on the phone, space is limited, and this would impact on the organization of ideas. Similarly, formal writing varies from free expression depending on the situation. When presenting your work to another person like an employer, the rules of grammar apply to show your prowess in language comprehension. In other formal cases, writers do not follow these rules, but they still communicate their ideas.
Given that my first language Arabic which is far from English, I had a lot to work on my writing , I am still learning today. I had to hire a private tutor to assist me with language in the evening after school. I remember how my classmates laughed at me when I could not pronounce the words ambassador and crotchet. The teacher too could not help when I pronounced crotchet as cr=otet. With the help of the tutor and a combination of books, my communication skills improved and I came to love English. When I came across Maya Angelous poetry, I fell in love with it. The sentence structures in the phenomenal woman are perfect, and her choice of words is just correct. For example, one of the lines says Im not cute or built to suit a models fashion size. It is a simple sentence that uses words that sound the same at the end. Despite the fact that my poem the Steak was the best in our class, the teacher said that I had a lot to improve on if I wanted to be a better writer.
I have developed a lot of interest in reading and watching movies. The literary works of William Shakespeare have also been an inspiration to me, and sometimes during my free time, I write poems and short stories. I hope to incorporate them into a book in future and make some money from the sales. After developing ideas from reading, I then brainstorm which prevents me from rushing into ideas. Sometimes with the help of a friend, I get additional ideas for my work. I then make a rough draft for my work which allows for the list of additional points. The draft also enables a coherent flow of ideas. Finally, I proofread my work to correct any errors after which I make a final draft. A plan helps me to work on the ideas independently so that they do not overlap. Sometimes I incorporate Arabic words into my literature. For a more natural understanding, I give a brief explanation of the text or a synonym in English. I have learned from other proficient writers that a sense of humor breaks the monotony. At times, I include jokes or wordplay to entertain the reader.
I believe that through reading and presenting my work, I have developed into a good writer. When I publish my literary work on the internet, I get a lot of positive feedback which boosts my morale. Writing remains one of the oldest forms of communication which will never lose its importance. The evolution of technology is the best thing that ever happened to communication because it makes it easier to replicate information and also increases the speed of access. For example, politics is becoming an interesting field with the onset of President Trumps administration. However, in no way do I feel that I should change my perceptions about writing.
