Pathophysiology And Clinical Management Essay Assignment
Discussion Post on Skin Condition: Cellulitis
Cellulitis is an acute infection of the skin caused usually by a breakage in the skin integrity (Hammer & McPhee, 2018). It normally affects the lower limbs especially for those working in farms or gardeners.
Pathophysiology
The pathophysiology of cellulitis starts with the skin’s normal flora. When there is a breakage in the skin’s integrity, these normal flora such as Staphylococcus aureus in the skin take advantage and cause an infection. This causes inflammation characterized by warmth, swelling, fever, redness, and pain (Cranendonk et al., 2017). Pathophysiology And Clinical Management Essay Assignment

Pharmacotherapy
The treatment for cellulitis is antibiotics and antipyretics for the fever. For the adult this includes for instance ceftriaxone 1g IV twice a day for 5 days together with Tylenol 500 mg TDS for 3 days (Katzung, 2018). The benefits include containment of the infection before sepsis sets in. the fever is also taken care of improving the quality of life. Contraindications and drug interactions for ceftriaxone include calcium gluconate and chloramphenicol (Katzung, 2018). Risks include eosinophilia and leucopenia.
There are no reports in the available literature of any interactions between ceftriaxone and complementary alternative medicine or CAM therapies (CDC, 2022). These include chiropractic therapy, yoga, massage therapy, meditation, reflexology, acupuncture, ayurvedic medicine, hypnosis, acupuncture, biofeedback, and the use of herbs and botanicals amongst others.
Evidence, Treatment Guidelines, and Peer-Reviewed Articles
Enough evidence exists on the effective treatment of cellulitis (Cranendonk et al., 2017). The guidelines are elevation of affected limb, antibiotic therapy, pain and fever relief, and management of any comorbid conditions exacerbating the cellulitis (such as diabetes). Two articles are those by Cranendonk et al. (2017) and Sullivan and de Barra (2018). They give the same recommendation of elevation, antibiotics, and pain/ fever relief in the acute phase.
