Racism And Slavery

Slavery in America started years ago. This is when people of color were controlled by the Americans. They were discriminated against by their racial origin. The people of color were also subjected to slavery which extended up to the 20th century. Although in recent years we’ve seen some of these acts of slavery, it’s not as brutal as it was back then. The black community has continued to be discriminated against their race up to date.
Slavery is linked to 20th-century racism through convict leasing. This was when people of color who were prisoners were being used to give labor to private parties. Then there was a permanent second class status whereby people of color were discriminated against within their state despite being legal citizens. Finally, there was a mass incarceration where a vas population of people of color is currently being locked up in local jails as well as federal and state prisons.
America has been treating different communities in very cruel ways. They discriminate against these communities based on race. People of color have no freedom over anything, they have no liberty to anything, they neither have options nor choices. What is given to them is what they have to take or leave it? Americans use this as their excuse to victimize, oppress and subject them to slavery. This slavery is in the form of mass incarceration.
America has deprived some communities of everything. More so, people of color, once they are sent out of prison, they have to suffer collateral consequences. Some of these include lack of jobs; once they apply for a decent job, their cv is rejected. Students are denied access to loans; this leads to school dropout since not many people of color can afford the school fee. They are also denied business licenses, food stamps if hungry and private rentals in regards to housing. (2016, October 12).
The community that was the most despised was the people of color. They were viewed as a threat to the Americans. The people of color had also conformed to their racial heritage and historical context from the past. We have seen leaders in recent years promising prison reforms and have tried to change the narrative of racial discrimination.
