Research Paper on LGBT
Introduction
The office is supposed to be a place where the employees of an organization are supposed to feel comfortable and safe while working. There is a minority group, however, that does not always feel so secure or so comfortable the time they set their feet in the office. This minority group cuts across gender, race, age, and religion among others. The LGBT is an acronym that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Initially, it stood for LGB which denoted only the gay community. LGBT is a sexual orientation classification that classifies those sexually attracted to the people of the same gender together. The norm in all societies of the world is heterosexual and people frown upon the LGBT community all over. In the workplace, it is no different, straight people are otherwise known as heterosexuals who make up the majority of the employee population discriminate and harass the LGBT employees. This research aims to uncover the harassment, discrimination, and bullying that the LGBT employees face in their workplace. This is a qualitative research and the method of data collection used will be the interview.
Literature Review
The LGBT is a minority group in the society that cuts across age, gender, social status, economic class and occupation among others. Despite this, they are frowned upon and hated by all quarters of the society. Their problems increase if their leaders or presidents are the ones leading the hatred towards them. In the workplace, LGBT individuals are subjected to bullying and harassment because of their sexuality. Adina (n.p, n.d) reports that many of them after seeing what the LGBT individuals that openly come out and declare their sexuality go through, they become afraid. And never openly talk about it. Adina (n.p, n.d) also reports that one-quarter of the working LGBT experience some form of discrimination and bullying in the workplace. The researcher says that the LGBT remain safe for as long as their sexual identity and orientation remain a secret. But once non-LGBT individuals become aware of their sexuality then discrimination and bullying begin.
Alison (68, 2015) looks at the efforts of the US towards ensuring that the rights of the LGBT are protected. She acknowledges that the Equality Act by the US Organizational and Health Administration has contributed towards the protection of the rights of the LGBT individuals. Alison (68, 2015) reports a great change in how the LGBT community is viewed today by the rest of the society compared to few years ago.
Another study carried out by CareerBuilder and released on GLAADs spirit day reports that about forty percent of LGBT employees feel discriminated or bullied in their workplace. The study also reports that the number of LGBT discrimination and bullying has increased since the 2016 US elections. When into office, he pulled down the page on the that addressed the rights of the LGBT community. He also banned the LGBT services in the military. The report by CareerBuilder reports that forty percent of those who were surveyed say that their bullies pick on them based on their appearance or gender. They said that they were wrongly accused of mistakes, ignored or judged and punished by different standards. They report that taking the issue of bullying and discrimination to the HR might not always help because not all employers are prepared to deal with LGBT while some consider it a non-important issue.
Anthony and Gelfand, (1833, 2016) suggest that the society should be educated and informed about the existence of the LGBT individuals and their rights. They think that public awareness of LGBT is important because it has redefined the norms of the gender perspective in several ways. Anthony and Gelfand, (1837, 2016) say that discriminating and bullying these individuals based on their sexual orientation is unethical and the society should be taught to live with them.
Mihelich (23, 2014) also explores the woes of the LGBT in the workplace. He looks at the strides and efforts that countries and corporations have made to ensure that LGBT individuals are not discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation. Despite the big strides that the society has made to recognize these people, some countries still lag far behind in the protection of the rights of these individuals. Georgia, for example, is one of the countries where an employee can be dismissed based on their sexual identity. Columbia, on the other hand, has instituted measures to help protect the rights of the LGBT community.
Methods
During this research, the method used to collect data was face to face interviews. Initially, there were two options. The first was the questionnaire and the second one was the interview. As a researcher, I weighed the pros and cons of both the methods and decided that interviewing was the best because interviews would give me a chance to ask follow-up questions to answers that were not satisfactory. This ensures that most answers provided are usable. The interview had questions that were open-ended and those that were open-ended. A sound recorder was used to record the interviews of all the 25 people who agreed to participate in our study. Willing participants were hard to find so we liaised with LGBT organizations who helped us to identify them. Once we identified them, we sent each of them an email. Out of the ninety emails that I sent, thirty people replied.
Results
Out of the ninety emails I sent out only thirty people responded which is about 33.3 percent. The people that agreed to meet face to face for the interview were only 25 which make up 27.8 percent of the number of people that received my email. Eight in ten respondents whom I interviewed said that they had experienced some form of discrimination and bullying in their workplace during the previous year. On the question of whether discrimination was increasing or decreasing, six out of ten respondents said that ever since the 2016 US elections, the bullying had increased in the workplace. When asked about the most peaceful period for the LGBT community, all of the 25 respondents said that during Obama’s time as US president was the most peaceful for them. On the question of whether they would be willing to openly declare their sexual orientation, nineteen of them refused. Two of them said they were not sure. The rest said that they did not mind whether or not people knew their sexual orientation. No one explicitly said that he or she would be willing to disclose their sexual orientation to their workmates.
Conclusion
To ensure the safety of the LGBT community in the workplace, the leaders need to be at the forefront of championing for the rights of the LGBT individuals. A leader, in this context, is anyone in charge of other people. It could be a corporate manager like a CEO or a political leader like the president. If leaders support the rights of the LGBT, their followers too will. LGBT organizations should also educate and inform the public of the existence of the group.
