Success in a global world means that organizations must have the ability to communicate effectively with non-English speakers in their native language (Scamman, 2017). To communicate in the languages your customers need, you may require language interpretation services, language translations services, or both. Interpreters and translators both have linguistic expertise, but the two roles are not the same (Scamman, 2017).
Similarities between Interpreters and Translators

o Both interpreters and translators work with a source language and a target language, meaning the language.

o Interpreters and translators must deliver a message from the source language to their target in the target language.

o Interpretation and translation are both linguistic fields.

o Interpreters and translators require professional qualifications and expertise.
Differences Between Interpreters and Translators
o Method: Interpreters must deliver a message orally (either consecutively or simultaneously), and translators work with written language to deliver their message in the text.
o Delivery: Interpreters work in real-time to facilitate communication, whereas Translation takes time for completion and can be started any time after a source text has been created.
o Expertise: Both interpreters and translators may have expertise in particular areas, but for a translator, this may mean that they are subject-matter experts. For an interpreter, this may mean special certification that allows them to interpret medical or legal terminology.
o Resources / Materials: While translators work with translation materials, such as dictionaries, texts, or CAT tools, interpreters work in real-time without sources or aids.
o Direction: Translators translate one direction: From the source material to the target language. Interpreters translate in two directions: From the source language to the target language and the target language back to the source language.
Providing a free flow of accurate information and a clear understanding about how to improve human health and prevent disease depends upon spoken, written, or signed words (Allen et al., 2020). Central to effectively sharing this knowledge is knowing how to meet people in a fair and trustworthy way while respecting the complexities and values within and among varying cultures (Allen et al., 2020).
Communication is difficult, and communicating about often frightening and overwhelming health issues is even more complex (Allen et al., 2020). When a health care provider does not speak the same language as those being treated, relationships can quickly become strained, important pieces of information can be lost, and gestures or turns of phrase can be misinterpreted (Allen et al., 2020). These lapses in language can change the course of someones life (Allen et al., 2020).
Quality improvement in all programs dealing with patients and medical staff across languages constitutes an important element of understanding the full impact of language access and services (Allen et al., 2020). One model for discussion of the quality of services is based on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicines six quality domains of safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, and patient-centeredness (Allen et al., 2020). Each of these domains can pertain directly to opportunities to improve the quality of translation and interpretation in medical settings (Allen et al., 2020).
At my place of employment we have both translators and interpreters. I have used a translator several times we have what is called a MARTI which is a video conference so that way the translator and patient can see each other. If we don’t have a MARTI available then we have a phone that we can use and it has two handsets so I am on one end and the patient is on the other so that way the translator can be on the line and talk to both of us. I have not personally had to use and interpreter but I know we do have them when we had orientation they handed out badge cards that had phone numbers on them if we needed to get ahold of someone. I believe that it does meet the patients needs. I know in my experience I had a patient that was on a Med Surg floor who had Covid and need PCU due to increse oxygen demands but when she was up on the Med Surg floor she refused to have her nasal cannula changed to corrlate with the oxygen setting. When she became my patient I made sure she had a translator to explain the situation and why she was on our unit and the reason why we needed to change her oxygen tubing, after I explained everything to her she was compliant and allowed us to change the tubing to high flow to corrlate with the oxygen settings.

Response 2 Sarah
The differences between an interpreter and translator are that interpreters are individuals that paraphrase the context. So listening to a speaker, paraphrasing what they understood and interpreting that information for others to understand the context explained. A translator is a paid individual that understand the source language and the culture then using a language in the returning comprehension to translate information (Language Scientific, 2020). These two sources are used in nursing care because they provide the respect, and quality care with reduction of errors, and poor outcomes of patients.
Being culturally competent is one thing but being culturally aware is another. Most patients and patients do not love using the translators because it can take away that rapport building between patient and nurse. But it is medically needed. Our hospital offers over the phone translation/interpreting services, screened (Ipad) services, and in person services which arent available as often. When patients refuse to use these devices we have them sign a paper in their chart stating the risks of misunderstanding information, and if they prefer family interpretation.

Response 1 Carole
Qualitative Question- Is using antibacterial hand sanitizer as effective as washing your hands with traditional antibacterial soap and water?
I appreciate this article because it reinforces what we’ve always known, that soap and water are the best way to eliminate germs in a clinical setting. Hand sanitizer is meant to be used if your hands are not visibly soiled. You must wash your hands after a few applications of hand sanitizer. Soap does take time to work, about 20 seconds, but it’s the best way to eliminate germs. Hand sanitizer isn’t effective if too little is applied or if it’s wiped off before it’s completely dried.

Response 2 Nicole
Qualitative question-If the appropriate wound care and dressing change instructions are given to a patient post drain placement, will there be a decrease in site infection?
I actually posted two articles. I appreciate the first one because it delves into preventing all infections while a patient is hospitalized and post-hospitalization. Number seven correlates the best, stating, “Know how to perform good post-surgical wound care.” It talks about good hand hygiene, the importance of good wound care, and infection prevention. The second article talks about direct patient involvement for the entire surgical process, pre, intra, and post. Having patient and family involvement is crucial in the wound healing steps and in preventing infection. I appreciate both of these articles as they both have similar approaches, but the first involves the entire infection prevent while hospitalized.

Discussion 3
Step 1: Read the following quote by Hubert H. Humphrey, United States politician (1911-1978).
It was once said that the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy, and the handicapped.
Step 2: Post a response to the discussion board by addressing the following questions:
1. Do you agree or disagree with the Humphrey statement? Why or why not?
2. State your reasons based on your knowledge of the health care system, current research, observations in the clinical area, and personal experience.
3. Justify your responses with appropriate resources.
Step 3: Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two of them
Cite any sources in 7th ed. APA format

Response 1 Danielle
I would have to agree with this statement. While it can be difficult to treat these demographics & populations it is vital to the greater good of the human race as well as our country. On a moral level it is only right that we treat children, elderly, & sick/poor/handicap with the resources that are most needed. Our government & leaders have the most power to make the biggest impacts. In my personal experience I have seen how vulnerable populations, such as the elderly & their families or caretakers have a hard time navigating even the small things such as Medicare or Medicaid. Resources in some areas of health, such as mental health seem not to be of high priority to fix with in the United States. It is hard to see our government continuing to cut funding to mental health services as the needs increase. “As states have shifted from institutional settings for adults with disabilities & mental illness to , problems have emerged, intrinsic and external. Resources to care for this challenging population have been shrinking, often resulting in high-stress work performed by unqualified, underpaid caretakers.” (Board, 2019).

Response 2 Sharon
“Insufficient insurance coverage, rising healthcare cost and widening disparity in access to healthcare services have adversely affected the elderly population” (Yamada, et. al., 2015, para. 2). The elderly are slowing down in life. It’s harder for them to keep up with technology and with the pace of everyday life. They often can’t hear or see as well. They are often sicker more frequently. They often have social security checks that are lower than the income they are used to, which can be a difficult adjustment, and they may even be forced to continuing working past retirement. It is part of our responsibility to help care for these people as they once cared for us, and to fight for them when they can’t fight for themselves.
